RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research focusses on measurement of dissolved gases in seawater using a segmented flow coil equilibrator. The in-house developed equilibrator is coupled here at the ICM to a state of the art Vocus Proton-Transfer-Reaction mass spectrometer equipped with a Time-of-Flight mass analyser. This allows us to measure simultaneously a broad range of gases dissolved in seawater and link their concentrations to biogeochemical processes. By measuring these gases in the ambient atmosphere and in seawater, we are able to calculate the sea to air flux of these gases. This is important to know as these gases impact atmospheric chemistry in the marine environment and thus the climate. These processes are especially important in the polar regions due to their importance of regulating the climate and the absence of anthropogenic influences in those regions.
