RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am a numerical modeler with experience in various fields of oceanography. My interests are wide, covering physical oceanography, climate science, biogeochemistry and microbial ecology. My current research consists in developing trait-based plankton models. I build models to understand the ecological competition for nutrients between phytoplankton ecotypes that have different ecological niches. Due to its short generation time, with around one division per day, phytoplankton can evolve at decadal timescales. Therefore, I include evolution in my models to improve the predictions of productivity, diversity and response to future climate change. But microbes do not only compete, they also cooperate, which is why I also build models of mutualistic interactions where microbes can exchange metabolites and infected cells can signal themselves to predators in order to keep herds healthy.
