RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research covers multidisciplinary aspects of atmospheric science, including marine aerosols and air quality in coastal areas.  I mainly use Aerosol Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (ATOFMS) and Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (AMS) to identify sources of particles in the atmosphere and to understand the physical and chemical transformations occurring in them once emitted. In close relationship with the University of Birmingham (UK), NUI Galway (Ireland), and Aerodyne Research Inc. (Massachusetts), I work on understanding aerosol size distributions collected in different environments, from remote marine to heavily trafficked ones. A main objective at ICM-CSIC is to directly identify the spontaneous creation of new nanometer-sized particles in the open ocean marine atmosphere and to understand the biological processes responsible for their emissions. The overall mission is to reduce the uncertainty of the atmosphere-ocean feedbacks impacting our changing climate.
