RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research is focused on marine microbiology and biogeochemistry. In particular, I´m very interested in studying microbial interactions, and how these associations can modulate marine biogeochemical cycles. Since 2011, my research has focused on the study of the trophic interactions between marine heterotrophic bacteria and phytoplankton in the phycosphere. Using secondary ion mass spectrometry techniques, I analyzed mutualistic interactions based on C and N exchanges between phytoplankton and attached bacteria and the impact of climate change on this partnership. Since 2018, I´ve been intrigued by the study of the microbial activity of the deep ocean, and the influence of the meso- and bathypelagic microbes on the global N cycling. Currently, using a combination of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis, network analysis, and secondary mass spectrometry techniques, I aim to explore the metabolic and trophic consequences of microbial interactions in the ocean.
