BSc in Environmental Sciences and MRes in Climate and atmospheric Sciences. I am interested in the evolution of the Earth through history and global change from a paleo-perspective. The aim of my PhD is to study the evolution of the Southern Ocean through the last Glacial Cycle, with an emphasis on assessing its capacity, and variation through time, as a carbon source and sink. To do so, I am analyzing the boron isotopic composition (δ11B) of planktonic foraminiferal shells from marine sediment cores which provides information of the pH of the ocean surface at a particular time. The resulting evolution of pH will allow us to reconstruct the pCO2 variability which, in combination with reconstructions of atmospheric CO2 concentration from ice cores, will allow us to characterize whether this ocean was a sink or source of atmospheric CO2. This role will likely be a function of the variation of the Southern Ocean upwelling/downwelling currents and fronts, which will also be reconstructed with additional proxies.
