I am interested in the environmental problem of ocean acidification, the associated changes in the chemical balances of the CO2 system in seawater, and the potential effects on the development and fitness of specific marine organisms. To this end, my research involves both observational and experimental data. On one hand, I am characterizing the spatial and temporal changes in the parameters of the CO2 system in the subtropical North Atlantic, from instrumental measurements performed in different hydrographic cruises, with a special focus on pH. On the other hand, I will start experiments of pH-manipulation in aquaria on jellyfish, to obtain clues on the possible consequences of ocean acidification on the whole life cycle of these organisms. I am also interested in coccolithophores and, in the near future, I plan to start measurements of coccolith weight in modern water samples from the World’s oceans.
