RESEARCH INTERESTS

The main goal of my thesis is to acquire fundamental knowledge about the two main gorgonian species from the Canary Islands (Eastern Atlantic), Leptogorgia ruberrima and Leptogorgia viminalis. In this regard, during the thesis several parameters are studied to provide an overview of the biology and ecology of these species, including demographics, population size structure, conservation status, sexual reproduction, and thermal tolerance. Based on the fundamental knowledge gathered in this thesis, a subsequent step is to use these findings to develop and improve new restoration techniques aimed at restoring gorgonian forests that have been damaged mainly by climate change.
