RESEARCH INTERESTS

The main objective of my thesis is the study of past climate changes in order to improve our knowledge on the Earth mechanisms and processes which control the atmospheric CO2 concentrations. For this purpose, I analize various organic biogeochemical proxies in marine sediments such as the long-chain alkenones which are synthesized by coccolithophore algae, the long-chain diols which are suggested to derive from eustigmatophite algae and diatoms or the GDGTs synthesized by archaea. These results will allow me to reconstruct sea surface and sub-surface temperatures, primary production patterns and also to assess changes in the relative abundances of marine algae populations during past glacial/interglacial cycles in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific and the New Zealand sector of the Southern Ocean. I am also interested in improving our understanding of the high to low latitude links through intermediate waters, between both study areas.
